Welcome to Madison
Madison is the capital city of the state of Wisconsin. Madison is the second largest city in Wisconsin, and the 83rd largest city in the entire United States. The city is largely populated by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a huge university located in the heart of the city. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the official state university of Wisconsin, as well as the oldest, largest, and the first public university in the state. There are nearly 30,000 undergraduate students and nearly 10,000 graduate students enrolled at the university, as well as over 20,000 faculty and staff members. Madison is very passionate about sports, also largely because of the university. Though Madison has a few professional and semi-professional sports leagues in town, the majority of their sports fame comes from the Badgers, the athletic department of UW-Madison. The students and community supporters of the various Badgers sports teams have earned Madison the previous title of the number one college sports town in the nation. Madison is one of only two cities in the country that are located on an isthmus, and is likely best known for its lakes. Madison has five lakes: Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa. Because of the lakes, Madison is often called "The City of Four Lakes," which doesn't include Lake Wingra, which is the smallest lake within the city. Madison also has the Dane County Regional Airport, a large airport that offers daily flights to nearby cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis. The city is a great city to live in. It is often included on "best of" lists by various publications. Throughout the years, Madison has been named one of the friendliest cities for bicyclists, one of the best places to raise a family, and one of the fittest cities in the nation. Madison is a wonderful city with so much to experience. Between the famous lakes, the college sports excitement, the great arts and entertainment scene, and the beautiful capitol building modeled after the United States' Capitol, Madison is truly a one-of-a-kind city.
